This Mercedes Benz 190 SL that you can see in the alternate set of photographs is unique. This 190 SL is the year 1955, created by Daimler-Benz AG and internally numbered W198, the road version of 1954 was based (somewhat loosely) in the competition of big success of the company, only sports car of 1952, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL (W194) which had less power, which still had carburetors. This model was suggested by Max Hoffman. Because it was intended for customers whose preferences were reported to Hoffman by dealers who supply the market boom, after the war in America, was introduced in 1954 New York Auto Show, unlike previous models introduced at either Frankfurt or Geneva shows.

The gullwing doors, hinged on the ceiling, so called because the door seemed open wings of a bird, were conducted as such to accommodate the car’s tubular chassis, designed by the chief development engineer DBAG, Rudolf Uhlenhaut. Part of the frame passes through what would be the bottom half of a standard door. This tubular chassis was a necessity, since the original car was designed exclusively for racing and should be as light as possible while still providing a high level of strength. This requires the driver and passengers do some gymnastics to enter or exit the car, usually by sitting and sliding on the threshold of the door wide. A wheel with a tilt away column made the process much easier.
